In the distant future mankind creates sentient cybertanks patterned on the human brain to help fight their alien enemies. Then, inexplicably, the humans vanished. They just went away. All that is left of the human empire are the cybertanks who, in their own way, keep the human civilization alive. With an intelligence based on the human psyche, the cybertanks continue to defend human space, but also perform scientific research, create art, form committees and ponder the universe.

These are the stories of one of the first cybertanks, known to his friends as “Old Guy.” He has outlived most of his peers, and has had a wealth of experiences over his long life, but he is starting to slowly become obsolete. Join him and his comrades Double-Wide, Whiffle-Bat, Smoking Hole, Mondocat, and Bob, as they live and love and fight alien enemies such as the Amok, the Yllg, and the Fructoids.

The Chronicles of Old Guy Volume 1 An Old Guy/Cybertank Adventure eBook Timothy J Gawne

Fortunately I read the second volume, Space Battleship Scharnhorst, first. If I hadn't, I doubt that I would have continued this series. It is a better book than this first volume. The series is obviously influenced by Keith Laumer's Bolo books and stories. I do not think that volume one is up to Laumer's standard but volume two is closer. As some others have noted, I don't care for the author's economic views but then he never really explains what he believes is so bad about neo-liberal economists and Milton Friedman in particular. Nor why his cybertank characters would think an Obama 2012 bumper sticker is cool. Like so many on the left he seems to simply expect all "right thinking" people to agree. One star for the politics. Four stars for the story and writing. A composite ranking of three stars.

The Chronicles of Old Guy Volume 1 An Old Guy/Cybertank Adventure eBook Timothy J Gawne Reviews

Halfway thru and I love it. Have read almost all Bolo Combat Unit heritage stories. Some are quite good. This series is fabulous. Gawne breaks the Bolo mold be giving the characters a sense of humor. Loved the “going into combat bumper sticker” gag. Looking forward to hearing the “neoliberal economist” story.
Anyone who can channel Firesign Theater (“Don’t Crush That Dwarf”) deserves your attention.
Oh my goodness what a fun read! Massive death-dealing machines, their brains based on human psychology, having fun and dealing with an interesting and somewhat dangerous universe. The writing is so interesting, frothy and LIGHT; the stories pass so quickly and there's not a second of boredom or wasted writing. Very funny at times, and often quite exciting, it was exactly what I needed. And now I have several more to read. Just lovely stuff. The humor reminds me very much of early Niven, as does the intense concentration on politics; Niven believed organ banks were going to cause massive problems for us in the near future (the death sentence for parking violations); Thawne is very worried about Malthusian population problems and worse, that they are being caused deliberately by the evil rich convincing people to breed and therefore driving down the price of human labor, causing starvation and other horrors. Not sure I believe that most modern Democratic politicians (Obama) are involved in this process, at least willingly, but it does make for some disgusting villians for the story!
An excellent story that goes way beyond the Bolo stories of the past. They've had a lot of time to evolve and now in essence, they are the human race and still defend its borders. Very well written, and an easy going read that is fun and relaxing. No small feat that for a new author. The science seems clear, understandable and plausible. Characters you come to like and admire. Humor in just the right amount, cleverly done. Honestly, you stop thinking of them as building sized war machines most of the time. And Vol 2 is even better. Keep writing them, and I'll keep buying them..

Highly recommend.
Wow, Wow, wow-wee, did I love this book. Hoo-Ra! Tim, ya done good! I am a die-hard Keith Laumer Bolo fan. Which I guess makes me a David Weber fan, but not as much as I loved Keith's books. I INHALED Chronicles of Old Guy like a Hoover run Amok. In fact, I blew away my reading budget, and was over-drawn in that dept. and sleep-deprived for several days. And I didn't care. I loved it that much.
Your irreverent, down to earth, stream of consciousness writing style, and natural flow as if a human is narrating just blew me away. And I'm a very hard man to impress. Forget the "sans peur et sans raproche", we're going straight to the "kill because that's what I do" approach. I loved the characterizations of the other tanks, the names cracked me up. I loved Mondocat. I loved the vampires, the library, Double-Wide. You named a mountain-sized killing machine that can pretty well raze a planet Double-Wide. I don't know, maybe it's a Massachusetts/MIT thing.
I was born and raised in Newton, though now that I'm tired and old I've lived all over the world. But I sure recognized that style. I don't know if anyone compared you to Asimov recently, but there are aspects of Isaac's irreverence from the old gang that definitely shown through.
So, not 24 hours after finishing the Chronicles, I've already bought SBC and the Library of Doom, and if you keep writing them I'll keep buying them! Your books so totally resonate with me that I am just an out of control giddy fan. Not the staid, laid back erudite professional I usually portray.
Thank you so much for feeding my addiction, I really do appreciate it. And at some point I'll catch up on the sleep. I'm really trying to throttle back on the reading a bit too, just to savor them and make them last a bit longer, but fortunately I can always re-read them.
Please do not run out of ideas, get bored, or move on to something else. Just keep writing what you're writing. You're like the ultimate kluged up train-wreck of Doug Adams, Heinlein, Asimov, Laumer, Weber; like someone took their psyches and threw them in the blender on puree for a few minutes. And I am so freaking hooked on the results!
Thank you! Please keep writing them!
I liked the concept and treatment of an AI-only (humans gone) universe well enough to purchase all of the books of the series (up to and including #6; this is significant since after reading over a couple thousand SF books, I now usually skip the books between the first and last ones because the fluff usually doesn't add much to understanding what transpired.) Not always consistently well written or paced but the main character is interesting and the post-human (and the times leading up to such) treatment of the universe is interesting.
